Some people say that patience is the answer. Others point out that practice and repetition is the key to success in golf. Some players even consider that having the right golf clubs is the magic potion to enjoying a better game of golf.

Great Answers, But…

I would have to agree that all of the above opinions are great and definitely have their place. But the most important aspect of golf that will help you become a skilled golfer, while at the same time having as much fun as possible is: Confidence.

Having confidence in yourself is of utmost importance in golf, and practically everywhere else in life as well. How you feel about yourself as a person will carry over into the quality of your game and the enjoyment you seek, or lack thereof. I have seen dozens of golfers increase their overall score and personal happiness with the slightest awareness and increase in their personal attitude and how they valued themselves.

Moving On To Performance

Increased confidence for the golf game does not stop at your individual self. The next type of confidence would be considered performance-oriented. Let’s be honest here, you can love yourself until the cows come home and still be insecure about your swing on the course.

If you have very little confidence in your ability to play the game then you will not perform well, plain and simple. And if you do not perform well then, you guessed it; you will leave the course feeling frustrated and angry.

Your authentic brand identity captures the essence of who you are, communicates your values, personality, and what you stand for to your market niche. By successfully communicating your brand identity, you will attract your ideal client, the person most likely to buy from you. Also, what this means, is you will repel people who do not have anything in common with you, and will probably never buy from you.

Step 2: Clarify your market niche

One of the biggest mistakes that entrepreneurs make, without fail, is they don’t have a clearly defined target market. They think they do, that it is women business owners who have a service business, or work-at-home moms, or people who have household incomes of $150,000 or higher, or businesses involved industry “X.” This information tells you very little about the buyer, how they make buying decisions, what motivates them to buy, and what values are important to them.

Lack of clarity about your target market will keep your income level stuck at its current level, no matter how hard you market. The reason is without a clearly defined market, you are marketing to everyone, and not reaching anyone.

It is imperative to determine exactly who your market niche is, and where you can find them. You need to know your market niche so well, that if you pass this person on the street, or you drive by their company, you can identify they are your ideal clients.

Step 3: Design a profitable business model

Most entrepreneurs’ business models don’t work, simply because they consciously have never thought out a well-defined business model. A business model is simply what activities you do to make money in your business.

Here are two some quick ideas how to create a better performing business model:

1. Decide on three core ways you will be paid for your topic, such as through teleseminars, workshops/retreats, and coaching programs.

2.Decide what percent of your income will come from each of these three core activities.

By doing these two simple steps, you will gain clarity about the activities you must focus on doing in your business to generate income, and you will also prioritize your activities.

Step 4: Develop creative packages

Packaging your services makes it easier for clients to make buying decisions. For use coaches and consultants, we typically do a needs analysis and assessment, by which our client then knows exactly what needs to be done to fix the problem. This has to stop, because you are giving away your coaching and consulting for free. To have confidence to increase your fees you must first determine the value of the results you create for your clients. A simple way to do this is brainstorm a list of thirty results clients can expect by working with you. Those results for your client could be:

-Raise your fees so you can potentially double your income in 2010

-Learn a sales process that gets people to effortlessly say “Yes” to your offers, making you more sales, a higher conversion rate

-Identify your brand archetype so you authentically and easily communicate who you are, and take out the guesswork about how to brand yourself

-Identify the right words to use to attract your target market

-Increase confidence and eliminate doubt

Think about the top result your client ultimately wants to get from working with you, such as ‘increase income,’ and quantify the result, if you can.

Step 6: Build your credibility

Another way to charge higher fees is to build your credibility, by being known and sought after as an expert in your field. The more people who know about you be seeing, hearing, and reading about you in different places, the easier it will be for you to command higher fees. There are a number of ways to build your credibility, including:

We are creatures of habit, and the key to building self confidence is to create routines and habits which work towards gaining self confidence. If, on the other hand, you were to approach your life in a less systemic and more random manner, the results achieved will reflect your approach.

Improving your self confidence is perhaps the most important single step you can take to increase your chances of success in any field.

Your self image affects how you challenge yourself. A confident outlook inspires you to tackle more difficult goals. It also affects other people’s opinion of you and therefore how they react to you.

How you see yourself in your mind’s eye shapes your future – it’s the closest thing to a self-fulfilling prophesy you’ll ever come across. If you see yourself as capable, in control, ready to take on new challenges and responsibilities – then you are well on the way to becoming that type of person.

As Orison Swett Marden said: “There can be no great courage where there is no confidence or assurance, and half the battle is in the conviction that we can do what we undertake.” and “Walk, talk and act as though you were a somebody, and you are more likely to become such.”

Self confidence can be simply inborn (until or unless the hard knocks of life diminish it) but more often is built through personal experiences. Succeeding in small endeavors inclines us to attempt bigger and grander things, and further achievement boosts the level of confidence still higher. So, one way to build confidence is to tackle new things, gradually increasing in difficulty. This is similar to the way you might train a muscle through lifting progressively heavier weights.

But there is a purely mental approach, too. You enlist the help of your subconscious. Positive self-talk is absolutely essential to building confidence. Successful people condition themselves to bombard their subconscious with their desired goals and self-image. The subconscious then has no chance to absorb anything except these confidence-boosting messages. The subconscious doesn’t question anything. It simply accepts, then acts on whatever it is told. This may be why children who are repeatedly told by their parents and teachers that they are lazy, clumsy or sullen act accordingly and reinforce that trait. On the other hand, those who are repeatedly told that they are clever, capable, and a pleasure to be around, also live up to that message. Comments from other people may carry a particular influence, especially if these are respected or authority figures – but can still be overwhelmed by consistent, frequent, powerful inner messages.

To make the inner message as strong as possible, it requires more than just the repetition of key phrases within the privacy of your own thoughts. Attaching strongly felt emotions and, if at all possible, speaking the words out loud makes them infinitely more effective. You don’t have to become a table-thumping, red in the face maniac shouting “I can do this!” to reap the rewards of this technique. Try something like “I lead a charmed life – I’m the luckiest person I know and I count my blessings every day. I look for the fun in every situation and I find myself laughing easily. I enjoy myself and make the most of every opportunity.” While you’re saying the words, create a mental picture of yourself in a happy situation, enjoying the success you have earned. Of course, you’ll need to construct a script tailored to your own circumstances, but remember that even if what your affirmation says is totally at odds with where you are today – it won’t stay like that for long. Your subconscious will soon take notice of where you want to go and start moving you in that direction. Once you’re happy with your own affirmations, recite them at least twice daily, out loud, putting as much emotion into the recitation as possible.

If affirmations sound completely alien to you, and you feel “that’s just not for me” – there is still a simple, effective way to use positive self talk. As an absolute minimum, every time you hear yourself questioning your ability to do something, immediately recall a time where, in similar circumstances, you obtained the result you were aiming for. Make the memory as real as possible – including the feeling of elation at your accomplishment. Then make the connection – “I did that. I can do this, too.”
